Economic Development

 The economy in St. Robert is strong.  One key indicator of the strong economy is the sharp increase in retail sales within the City limits. In 2013, retail sales exceeded $222 million, up from the $168 million in 2005.  The growth in retail sales is largely due to the increase in commercial businesses in the City.  Based on the city’s sales tax figures, the St. Robert’s economy continues to strive.  In fact, the commercial and retail businesses in our area have increased. During this time many new commercial and retail businesses and restaurants have chosen to located within the city such as Lowe's Home Improvement Store, Panera Bread, Buffalo Wild Wings, Colton's Steakhouse, Kum & Go Convenience Store, Culver's, Hardee’s, Rue 21, Little Caesar Pizza, Italian Bistro, and Shoe Sensation and three new hotels.economy in St. Robert is strong.

The YTD Taxable Sales Revenue through July CY 2014 for Saint Robert was $107,984,690.99 and $182,102,440.37 for Pulaski County.

  • Total construction valuation from 2000 - 2010 was $139.9 million
  • Total construction valuation for YTD 2011 is $13.9 million
    • 4.7 million residentional (new housing starts up 81%) - 35 permits
    • 2.6 million commercial - 3 permits
    • 627 thousand in other construction - 58 permits

St. Robert's Enhance Enterprise Zones

Enhanced Enterprise Zones are specified geographic areas designated by local governments and certified by the Department of Economic Development (DED). Zone designation is based on certain demographic criteria, the potential to create sustainable jobs in a targeted industry and a demonstrated impact on local industry cluster development. Tourist Location

St. Robert has a tourist industry with families and friends attending Fort Leonard Wood Soldier graduation ceremonies, conferences and other special events.  Currently, 100,000 service members train annually on the military post. Fort Leonard Wood has been a relatively stable “tourist” base that has led to the construction of several hotels and motels in our area. We currently have 22 motel/hotels in the area with over 1300 rooms. We anticipate that this source of “tourists” will remain stable and even increase into the future. As the families visit our area, they need activities to keep them busy, to include shopping and entertainment opportunities.

Quality of Life
Cost of living.  The Fort Leonard Area has a Cost of Living Index of 80.3 and Cost of Housing Index of 80.7 as compared to Kansas City and St. Louis with a Cost of Living Indexs of  97.1 and 91.5 respectively. 

Average Income.  Along with a low cost of living, the St. Robert/Fort Leonard Wood median household income in 2007 was $40.729 per year.  Fort Leonard Wood's impact on wages includes an average government service civilian salary of $41K, average officer rank of Major with an average salary of $65K-75K and average enlisted rank of staff sergeant with a salary of $33K - $35K. 

Major Employers.  Fort Leonard Wood is the areas largest employer employing over 3,800 DOD Civilians, 5,400 other civilians (NAF, AAFES, Contractors, MWR), 7,100 permanent party military personnel and over 100,000 service members being trained annually at Fort Lenard Wood. 

Other area employers include the Waynesville R-VI School District with 700 employees, Walmart with 397, Lowe's Home Improvement Store with 118, Ehrhardt Properties with 101 and Pulaski County with 100.

Recreation.  In 2009, the residents of St. Robert passed a 1/4 cent sales tax for the development of new park projects.  In 2010, the city construted a  $3.4 million project Aquatics Facility which features both an outdoor and indoor pools.  In addition to the aquatics facility, the city has a par-3, nine-hole course.

Transportation. St. Robert is bisected by Interstate 44 and provides access to the main gate of Fort Leonard Wood. Our location on I-44, gives us the ability to capture additional tourist traffic that are on their way or returning from a tourist site—such as Branson or St. Louis. The City is located at a good location roughly midway for traffic traveling to and from Branson or St. Louis and is becoming known as a stop over destination for meals and lodging when traveling on I-44. Nearby, the Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport has full ILS support and is one of the best regional airports in the state.

Over 26,000 cars per day travel Missouri Avenue in St. Robert and over 33,000 cars per day travel I-44. 

St. Robert is in the Waynesville R-6 School District, which consistently ranks among the top school districts in the state. The District has recently constructed a new state of the art high school and hosts a Technical Academy which serves the entire county with a wide range of technical and skill-oriented courses.
